Set in the perhaps-not-so-distant dystopian future, the unfortunately titled Urinetown: The Musical explores environmental disaster, corporate greed, government corruption, and social irresponsibility, all while hilariously satirizing the genre of musical theatre itself.
Following a twenty year drought, water has become so scarce that private toilets are considered an unthinkable luxury. Public amenities, owned by an unscrupulous megacorporation, now charge citizens ever increasing admission fees to meet one of humanity's most basic needs. Bobby, a dashing young hero, decides to follow his heart and lead the downtrodden to revolution, declaring with startling honesty in the midst of absurd comedy, that "no man should be denied his essential humanity due to the condition of his pocketbook. No man in need should be ignored by another with the means to help him."
New Light Theatre's mission is to use each production to raise awareness and support for thematically connected charitable organizations that bring light to the darkness of the world. In accordance with this mission, Urinetown: The Musical partners with Housing Alliance Delaware, a non profit organization that works to address affordable housing needs in our communities, combat the crisis of homelessness, and coordinate safe shelter for those in crisis.
